Purpose
The purpose of this
curriculum is to serve as a basic instructional tool for the teaching of Music
in grades 5-8.
This document is to serve as
a guide which contains concepts and skills which are to be taught, the scope
and sequence of the curriculum, correlation of skills to the New Jersey Core
Curriculum Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts and suggested
learning activities and references to teacher resource materials. Teacher
resource materials include various visual and auditory resources, activities,
technology and ideas to enhance Music instruction in grades 5-8.
Philosophy
Music is so important in our cultural heritage that it must be considered an integral part of the total educational program. To each new generation this facet of our heritage is a source of knowledge, inspiration and pleasure which enables us to forma way of life.
Music contributes much to the fulfillment of social, emotional and spiritual needs. As individuals face the everyday problems of life, they need aesthetic and inspirational experiences. Music educators believe that music education can increase the sensitivity of all children to the power of music as an art and develop their potential to perceive the art of music keenly and respond to it deeply.
The Music Curriculum embraces the life of the commitments and draws on the nation and the world for its course content to enrich and maintain our cultural heritage.

Evaluation
The Board of Education recognizes that a system of grading student achievement may assist the teachers, students and parents to better access the student’s progress toward district educational goals and assists the student in the implementation of that progress.
Grading shall be the system of measuring and recording student progress and achievement, which enables the student, parent and teachers to:
Effective evaluation to determine mastery will be accomplished through a variety of criteria and activities. Listed below are some of the criteria and/or activities teachers may use:
1. Performance

3. Individual or group projects
4. Journals/written critiques
5. Teacher made tests and quizzes
6. Text Unit and/or Level tests
7. Essays and written reports
8. Oral presentation
9. Class preparation and homework

11. Music notebooks containing the course’s materials
